Existence Theory for AI Agents

AI agents need a theory of action.

Existence Theory frames an AI agent as a system that continues by acting outward, adjusting inward, recognizing boundaries, and preserving coherence under pressure.

External action

An agent changes the world through tool use, output, requests, delegation, and execution. But action alone is not enough when reality pushes back.

Internal adjustment

A stable agent must convert failure into strategy change. Without adjustment, each error becomes another instruction patch.

Continuity

The agent needs a way to continue without becoming rigid, reckless, or incoherent. Continuity is preserved through boundaries and revision.

Why prompts are not enough.

A prompt can tell an AI agent what to do. Existence Theory asks what kind of world the agent thinks it is acting inside: what exists, what matters, what can be affected, what is unknown, and what should make it stop.

This distinction matters for long-running agents. The first plan often fails when it touches reality. The important question is not only what the agent should do next, but what should make the agent change itself before doing the next thing.

The minimum action loop.

Observe the failure. Define the boundary. Simulate alternatives. Ask for missing input when needed. Change strategy. Act again. This loop is the practical bridge between philosophical primitives and operational agent behavior.
